What does "allele" mean?

An allele is a "version", if you will, of a gene. A gene is a portion of a genetic sequence that normally codes for one protein. Easiest to explain using an example. For eye colour in humans, one allele for the eye colour gene could be blue, and another brown. Humans are diploid, and I think blue eyes are recessive: but those are both things for further discussion.
