If in Islam the concept of a monarchy is rejected how is it that there is a king of saudi?

I did not know that Islam rejects monarchy. My country is an Islamic country and it has 9 Sultans. Their authority is only limited to Islamic affairs after independence from the British. But before the Brits came it was an Islamic monarchy country with the sultans having full access to military, taxes and other stuff.
